So while the whole trip is about westward ho! today felt particularly that way. After leaving Kansas City in the morning and stopping in Weston, we needed to make it to Cheyenne by evening by skirting past Iowa and getting through Nebraska.Along the way, we had of course one more piece of kitsch to visit…the World's Largest Sod Plow. Gothenburg also happened to have an old pony express stop which was cool but not really photo worthy (or a better way of saying it is that I failed to make the photos interesting hence their omission). Anyway, the sod plow and surrounds were actually pretty cool. And of course, a car needs gas covering 4 states in a day. We stopped right about sunset and I took a few shots at the truck stop. The light was great and I really glad the pictures turned out…as an aside, trucks and the truckers who drive them are fascinating.During the drive, I found myself often thinking how great it would be to join their ranks…really they have the best office view – especially at sunrise and sunset depending on which way they are heading. There is a great documentary on the topic (not the best editing job but super interesting nonetheless) – link here.

So we headed out the next morning (after seeing our Great Great Grandmom's family home in KS) to Weston…home of kitch stop #2 – the World's Largest Ball of String, Not Twine…and yes, that is it's official title.
Located in the beautiful little town of Weston, the best thing about the largest ball of string not twine was not the actual ball but the brewery it is located in…my brother charmed his way in a hour before they were opened and came out with a couple of random bottles and a 6 pack…and no his charm didn't allow him to avoid paying… -
We were greeted with incredible summer storms as we headed into Illinois…crazy wind and the kind of rain that weighs down the sky…I thought I had left the monsoon at home… I took this shot through the window (catching a refection of the interior)…
After we had made it through the worst of the storm we stopped to check the roof (where the bikes were) and I was able to snap a shot at the gas station…We continued through Illinois – corn is definitely a distinguishing feature of the southwest Illinois landscape…and the sky and clouds were absolutely amazing…the complete opposite of a few hours earlier…But the best reward for making it though the storms…Americana Kitch….in the form of the World's Largest Catsup Bottle…totally awesome and worth the detour…And of course…the sunset was so beautiful, I had to include two pictures. -

After a rather long travel day, I finally made it to Bloomington. Walking back from the rental car drop off, I took what I thought to be a slight detour on the way back – there were some pretty trees that distracted me.
Turns out, it was a rather large detour…I think my brother is still amazed at how I got so off track – apparently what should have been a 15 minute walk turned in to a 2 hour one. I for one wasn't too disappointed, although a wee bit tired and sweaty (Indiana takes it's humidity very seriously). My meandering yielded a few good pictures along the way….Indiana limestone sure is pretty and Bloomington is one cute town. Apparently though, the novelty I had experienced at seeing jack rabbits (and managing to photograph them) wasn't all that unique….jack rabbits are to Bloomington what cows are to Modesto…o well, I still thought they were cute. -
There are just travel days where everything goes right – your brother wakes up very early (even though he works graveyard and could use the sleep – tks bro!) to take you to the airport, the weather is beautiful when you reach your destination, the lady behind the rental car counter asks you about yourself and why your visiting then upgrades you free of charge as a surprise (Awesome Prius!), and waiting at the end of the car ride is someone you love dearly….your Grandad.
Here are some pics from my fantastic travel day and the visit… -

I love the drive from the bay area north on I-5. It is an amazing stretch of road that has some darn pretty scenery….especially when the sun is setting behind the hills…Highway 80 isn't bad either…when you catch it at the right time of day. These drives are good practice for the big one that is coming up….
