• My nephew had his family birthday party (an event designed to save other adults from dealing with large groups of loud, rambunctious children – an idea for which I am deeply grateful and appreciative) a couple of nights before we headed back to India.

Of course that meant we had my sisters chocolate cake – ok, this stuff is like crack.  Frankly, I am beginning to wonder if she thinks this is the only reason we come….even though  I assure her it is for the love of my nephew and no other reason…really….no really!  I think the birthday boy has clued into this obsession.  His decorations on his cake seemed to be about trying to claim his property and discourage others from consuming it…so sorry dude – you have to share.

  • We finally made it to Cali with time to spare (before sunset).  This ranch is beautiful …horses, a few cows and a crazy squirrel (serious hoarding issues).  The photo opportunities were great - the light was awesome.  The night was so quiet.  It was great to fall asleep knowing the next day we didn't have 10 hours of driving to do…

  • No one is really sure of the story…locals say the guy who built this was running drugs, others think he was a medicine man trying to work out a dream.  I thought it was strange and interesting…these were my favorite of what I shot there.

  • but your still a bit scary so we stayed elsewhere for the evening…..still needed to capture the neon lights.
  • So pretty…so hard to take pictures from a fast moving car….

  • So maybe we really need to direct more money to education or at a minimum require spelling tests for Nevada state employees.

  • Oh yeah baby….I drove on the Bonneville Salt Flats!  It was awesome – the driving as well as the landscape. I think we both wished that there wasn't a car full of all their possessions (ok, maybe it was just me) so we could floor it – regardless – fantastic experience…maybe I can convince Dad to go back with the Pony to see what it could do…hummm wonder if I would be allowed to drive it?
And now for the video!! (thanks Dar!)
  • Fort Bridger is a great pit stop in the south west corner of Wyoming.  The fort has been rebuilt and has some fun stuff – a replica general store, a museum and a very funny park warden.  Just make sure you get a Rootbeer Float from store down the street – totally yum and cheap!  Nice treat before getting back in the car for another few hours!
  • My brother introduced me to a film called Gasland – a very serious documentary about natural gas production and the ecological catastrophe it causes…
I had assumed (note ass out of u and me – in this case just me) that natural gas was clean energy – at least better than oil…well, boy I was wrong.  I am doing this post because Wyoming was the #2 producer of natural gas in 2007 and I saw the above picture everywhere.  I didn't know what they were and when I showed my brother the pictures, he told me about the movie….watch it.
If you don't think it effects you, it does.  A few, factual and very scary items to consider:
    • For each natural gas well,  80-300 TONS unregulated chemicals and 2 MILLION gallons of water are being pumped into the ground to get the gas out.  Think of all that water and (fuel for the water tankers carrying it) being wasted!
    • Wells go an average of 8000 feet deep and drinking water aquifers are about 1,000 feet deep – so drinking water gets polluted to the extent it can catch on fire as it comes from the tap!
    •  Waste water is pumped to the surface to be evaporated causing plumes of toxic "fog". If you eat meat, the animal your consuming probably lived in a plume of toxic fumes or drank contaminated water – look at the map, this is where beef cattle and other livestock are raised!
Best of all, the EPA has NO JURISDICTION because there is a loophole in the 05 Energy Bill exempting gas drillers.
They don't even have to report the chemicals they are pumping into the earth and our water. Thanks again Bush and Dick!
Gasland's website is great – you can take action there and sign up for alerts.
  • Hopefully, the photos in this post will convince you that there are at least two states that have the right to the title big sky country…but hey, as far as state mottos go, being the "Cowboy State" isn't half bad – especially when you have a weak spot for wranglers and boots.

Wyoming is amazingly beautiful and it helped that we had clear skies most of the way.

And finally, for sheer shock, gawk value (particularly for animal lovers/ veges like myself) if you are anywhere near Rawlins, WY, stop by Jerry's donuts…there are more dead animals in this place than donuts…
