My brother introduced me to a film called Gasland – a very serious documentary about natural gas production and the ecological catastrophe it causes…
I had assumed (note ass out of u and me – in this case just me) that natural gas was clean energy – at least better than oil…well, boy I was wrong.  I am doing this post because Wyoming was the #2 producer of natural gas in 2007 and I saw the above picture everywhere.  I didn't know what they were and when I showed my brother the pictures, he told me about the movie….watch it.
If you don't think it effects you, it does.  A few, factual and very scary items to consider:
  • For each natural gas well,  80-300 TONS unregulated chemicals and 2 MILLION gallons of water are being pumped into the ground to get the gas out.  Think of all that water and (fuel for the water tankers carrying it) being wasted!
  • Wells go an average of 8000 feet deep and drinking water aquifers are about 1,000 feet deep – so drinking water gets polluted to the extent it can catch on fire as it comes from the tap!
  •  Waste water is pumped to the surface to be evaporated causing plumes of toxic "fog". If you eat meat, the animal your consuming probably lived in a plume of toxic fumes or drank contaminated water – look at the map, this is where beef cattle and other livestock are raised!
Best of all, the EPA has NO JURISDICTION because there is a loophole in the 05 Energy Bill exempting gas drillers.
They don't even have to report the chemicals they are pumping into the earth and our water. Thanks again Bush and Dick!
Gasland's website is great – you can take action there and sign up for alerts.
